field trip已經被cancelled了啦!
其實,老實講有點開心耶!
因為實在太遠了,
重點是要去五天!
之後的那個week又一大堆東西要交.
所以現在不去也好!
不過,那些assessment的東西當然要照做.
不過,現在教授應該極度不爽吧!?
給分說不定會更嚴格耶.希望不要~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After quite some soul searching yesterday I came to the conclusion that it will be in the best interest of all of us to cancel the planned field trip to Monkey Mia. I understand that some of you will be quite upset about this, but I based my decision on the lack of commitment by some students to this unit as well as their lack of group responsibility, which both would be essential for a successful field trip involving only a relatively small group. Let me summarise just some of the points I based my decision on:


More than a quarter of all enrolled students did attend less than 50% of the seminars so far

I was particularly disappointed by the low turn up yesterday as I already announced before the teaching break as well as in last week’s class plus on blackboard and by email to all students that we would be very fortunate to have a guest lecture with great relevance to the field trip yesterday and that I expected all students to attend. Only one student made the effort to let me know that he would not be able to make it! I started the class for the first 30 minutes with only two students, then it gradually filled up to about 50% for the guest presentation in the second half of yesterday’s seminar – no comment …

I was unable to undertake a joint risk assessment exercise as part of the field trip preparation yesterday as only 50% of the class attended (although it was announced in class last week that this exercise would be scheduled for yesterday)

I tried to get in touch with some of the ‘more notorious’ absentees as well as those who did not submit any assignment as yet (25%) to find out what’s going on, but this wasn’t a very fruitful exercise … one response I got, for instance, was along the lines of ‘I just couldn’t be bothered’ …

To top things up I received an email later yesterday from one student asking about the possibility to shorten, cancel or re-schedule the fieldtrip due to time, financial and other uni constraints (e.g. other assignments need to be submitted after the tuition free week), - and this in Week 6 of the semester, less then two weeks before the planned departure …


In the light of all this I do not believe that it will be feasible as a group to undertake this fieldtrip. Since the very first day of the semester I have made it perfectly clear that if we go this requires a clear and firm commitment from all involved. For a successful fieldtrip I think it is important to have a certain level of basic group responsibility, which might also be essential should problems emerge during the excursion as we need to be able to rely on each other. As things are at present I couldn’t even be sure that on the Monday morning of our departure all students would turn up …


I know that some of you will be quite disappointed, but the cancellation of the field trip will not have any significant impact on the outstanding assessments, since you will be able to obtain the relevant information through other means of communication (e.g. telephone interviews, email). For those, who would still prefer to undertake the trip, I would suggest to do so privately – of course, I am happy to support you in any possible way (e.g. contacts). I will also keep the pre-booked accommodation until Friday, so should you still intend to go, please let me know before the end of the week.

The unit aimed to give you the rare opportunity to get in contact with the industry and to experience tourism management in the real world. The importance and relevance of this was very clearly stated by our guest lecturer from the Tourism Council WA … so in my view the cancelled field trip as well as the very interesting presentation today with the associated chance for some potentially useful networking were a missed opportunity for you.
