Airlines will soon be able to increase the number of flights between Australia and Taiwan, the federal government says.
Air service capacity would increase from 4,000 seats a week to 5,000 by October this year, rising to 6,000 seats a week by October 2007, Transport Minister Warren Truss said.
Capacity and frequency restrictions will be lifted on services between Taiwan and Australia's smaller international airports such as Cairns, Darwin and Adelaide.
"Under the new arrangements, opportunities to attract new services will be available to Australia's main gateway points - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth - and to all of Australia's regional gateways," Mr Truss said in a statement.
"The deal will allow airlines from both Australia and Taiwan to plan confidently for future services.
"It is hoped that the new arrangements will encourage the development of air services to and from regional Australia."
The deal follows an agreement between Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei.
